Limitless Revolution

This is my story of personal empowerment and aligning with my purpose. My hope is that you can see through the process of healing old pains and returning to love, we can become limitless.

You may know me from teaching a class in your salon, hearing me host the Limitless Hairdresser podcast, or maybe we have become friends through social media. You may just be meeting me for the first time now! Hey, I’m Kelli Mason! I play many roles in the life, I am a hairdresser, salon owner, podcast host, educator, mama, wife, daughter, sister, friend, artist, yogi, meditator, human, and most importantly I have discovered that I am the light illuminating inside all of those roles.

kelli march 2019-final-0126.jpg

I’m totally in love with my messy, obscure, beautiful, artsy, and sometimes upside down world.

The beauty industry has my heart and a large part of my mission the last fear years has been to bring insight and broaden the perspective of what was readily available at our finger tips like 👊🏻creating a business you love, building a brand with confidence, and being happy with whatever phase you are at in your career & life.

But that doesn’t even begin to SCRATCH THE SURFACE! Those are all great things, don’t get me wrong, however that inspiration was only a nudge to get this Limitless Hairdresser ball rolling and get out of my own fears.

Here is what’s really up……..No filter, because I think you need to hear this, and I’m ready to share.👇🏼

You see, I wasn’t always this certain in my purpose or my power. I was a very, very, very, lost and confused soul...Yeah, all those positive posts I make now, that was totally not how I felt. When I was 13 I started suffering from depression. So bad that I decided one day that my life was not worth living and I decided to take my own life. The universe had other plans for me because, I survived. I couldn’t even bring myself to say the words suicide until this last year. I would tremble with shame, embarrassment, and feel the sting of the pain I caused myself and those around me for so long. It’s a silent kind of suffering that is indescribable. Just a faint, constant screaming in the back of your mind of, “you that you are bad, wrong, something is not right within you…you are small” on repeat. Life in general is a constant battle of the mind, throw in depression and strap in...there is a lot of inner work to do.

(Note: This is my story of battling depression and recovering from the pain that I have experienced. In no way am I discounting the experiences of others or denying modern medicine as a reputable source for treatment. This is from my personal experience and I realize we all have different paths.)

When we are yearning to heal and we don’t really know how, we end up shoving things so deeply down to drown out the voice. As we get older and time moves on we don’t even know what pain is coming from where anymore. We feel dull and life seems to just go through motions. I felt that way for a very long time. Happy and “normal” up close, but distant and disconnected. Hiding in fear, shame, and unworthiness.

The next 6 years were a very rocky road filled with ups and downs. Some days great some days low again a rattled teen craving deeply for some meaning and purpose.

After a series of unbearably low months when I was 19, I found myself so close to the thoughts of that 13 year old version of me. I failed out of college and I was completely in my head listening to stories I had created of being unloved and without purpose. I was far, far away from my heart.

If you’ve read this far THANK YOU, I appreciate you! I promise this story gets BRIGHTER, empowered, and I hope very helpful for you on your own personal journey.

Clearly, this is before balayage...circa 2007 when I was in beauty school.. 👀💇🏽‍♀️🤔

Clearly, this is before balayage...circa 2007 when I was in beauty school.. 👀💇🏽‍♀️🤔

💇🏽‍♀️💇🏽‍♀️Something amazing happened though....I got a second chance. I loaded all my belongings into my little white vibe and made the 24 hour trek from Texas to Michigan to live with my parents. As I sat silent, despondent, and numb…a glimmer of hope peeked through.

I started to plan. The only way to get to a destination is to the have an end result in mind…so off I went to make it so. I enrolled in the local cosmetology school, got a job as a waitress at an Asian bistro (learned some mad chopstick skills), had really bad beauty school hair 🙋🏽‍♀️, and saved all the cash I made in a little tin box and started to get my life together.

I fell in LOVE! I became obsessed with the artistry and connection I got to have with clients. I was shown so much gratitude while crafting looks and being of service. They were thankful for ME??!!

I immediately started to feel like I had a PURPOSE. I knew this is what I was made for! How things can change if we ready, willing, and desperate to make a change!

Fast forward 10 years and I had grew my dream clientele, opened a salon, been traveling the US teaching for a company, got married, had 2 kids, and started my first education company. Holy wow---I should be on top of the world....right??

👉🏻The only problem? Things started to fall apart. I got high on my ego in a new way. Thinking that all of this materialistic success would make the pain disappear. My dreams were fleeting. I wasn’t in my power and started to feel lost. As I hungered for more thinking that would solve my problems, I followed what other people had done that seemed “happy and successful”. I didn’t find my happiness there…it lead me to feeling stuck in someone else’s dream.

🤯What am I meant for? What am I supposed to be doing now? Why do I feel stuck? Why isn't this enough anymore? Will I ever feel happy?

🧘🏽‍♀️These were the questions I started to ask myself.

🌟Little did I know, the answers were all inside. I just had to tap in, shut up, let go, and step into my superpower that was ready to be unlocked…..

One thing I’ve learned on this healing journey…don’t take yourself too seriously!

One thing I’ve learned on this healing journey…don’t take yourself too seriously!

I was in a place where I was totally bombing this personal growth thing—I was resistant and stubborn to be who I was meant to be. I was stuck, stuck, stuck, in fear, doubt, worry, uncertainty, and unworthiness? How on earth do you get out of that mess? Time to get real vulnerable (common theme here!) and tap into the WHY.

A simple yet POWERFUL word:  why?

Why am I doing this to myself?

Why are things not flowing for me?

Why is there resistance to my purpose?

Why do I feel not good enough?

Why, why, why?

meditate crystals.jpg

I got so wrapped up in achieving and chasing what others were doing that I lost sight of who I am and what my superpower is.

I was so busy trying to make people comfortable so that I didn’t feel guilt or shame for shining (whattttttt!). I downplayed my greatness and settled for mediocrity so that I didn’t have to feel the sting of potential judgement. 👉🏻Insert pity party for one 🤕👈🏼

When our ego's try to control everything, we lose the feeling of fulfillment because we are disconnected from our hearts. This no longer became an option, I couldn't withstand the pain, suffering, and resistance any longer--- I surrendered. White flag up. I can’t do this by pushing and grinding my way to a misconception of “success”. Time to start asking myself some hard questions.

I began fully diving into meditation guided by my first spiritual teacher who just so happened to be my Great Uncle. He taught me so many things that I never knew but were in plain sight. A disciplined few years of digging up the things that were limiting my full potential led me to an understanding that I wish for everyone in this world. I delved into books, audios, classes, and a structured yoga practice. I wanted to understand myself so that I could be of service to my highest potential to others.

I meditate every day in many different ways. This alone has changed my life.

I meditate every day in many different ways. This alone has changed my life.

Eventually through the commitment, I found a rhythm that created momentum and increased my awareness nearly on demand. I began to go inward daily, hourly, every minute and looking to my higher self what she wanted and what she knew to be true. It was painful to face my own doings, yet brilliantly liberating as I started to see shifts in my disposition and miraculous manifestations in this physical world.

*The words became kinder yet more firm. My mind wanted to argue and resist, but I couldn’t deny that she was right.*

When I asked “Why am I creating this drama for myself?”

My highest most loving self (imagine the way you would speak to your child) answered, “You are afraid of what it would be like to let go of who you used to be.”

“Why am I so afraid, I don’t want it. I don’t want to feel this way.” I would plea.

“You are afraid because it’s uncertain. The way you are is all you know. Letting that go, who would you be? Are you ready to let her go and be who you want to be? Can you stop resisting what you deserve?” My loving self said.

“I am. I am ready. What do I need to do?” I question.

“You step into your power. You do what makes you feel purposeful and inspired at any cost. You get vulnerable and brave. Do the things that are ignited from your heart! Let go of the limitations.” She shouted!

kelli February 2019-final-0122.jpg

And these are the conversations I have with myself over and over and over again until little by little it sticks a bit more. I keep coming back to the WHY? Why am I doing this and is it aligned with what i know to be true in my heart.

New year, new beginnings
4 rituals.png

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Yes, all the amazing holidays have just been upon us, but did you know astrologically it is Capricorn season?  It just so happens to be when I was born, too. 😁 Right now there is such a call to be grounded. Capricorn is notorious for hardworking, ambitious, practical, disciplined, and well...earthy, stubborn little goats.  This is a time where I tend to fall into the trap of being ultra critical and feel like there are still so many things left to accomplish before the year turns.

The cool thing about Cappy season is that it aligns with Winter Solstice and the new year.  The shortest day of the year has turned and more light is being brought into the world, YAY!  It’s a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Goodbye taking ourselves so seriously and hello celebrating all the successes!

This year I spent a lot of time stripping away what was not serving me and realized many nifty things about us as humans, one of which I dug deep on was the power of choice.  Just because our zodiac says we are brought into this world with these attributes, doesn’t mean we have to succumb to them. Honestly, as I have reflected on the purpose of these said traits, I believe they are there for us to become aware and choose whether or not we will allow them to define us.

Each year I have a few practices I do before the year turns to help keep me on the track of progression. It’s such an energetic time and it’s so important to have your intentions completely clear so you can have the best year yet.  The more detailed the better. I also have added a new one that I will share with you so you can try it with me.

If you’re seeking clarity, peace, and more self love in your life, I know you’ll love these practices!

As always, I LOVE to hear back from you! Please shoot me an e-mail back if you try these out or connect with me over on the gram!  Happy manifesting your dream life and being a limitless hairdresser, you totally deserve it.

The 4 rituals for the best year ever.

  1. Setting the tone with a guidance word.

Think of this magic word as your personal mentor for the year.  It has all of the answers, it always knows best, and it ALWAYS RULES.  For example, my word for 2018 was FREEDOM.

Every single time i was faced with a decision or I was beginning to create something new, I referred back to freedom.

Does this choice make me feel free or is it resistant?

If the answer was not a feeling of freedom….it was a hard no. If i found myself feeling yucky and out of the flow I would sink into a meditation and ask my higher self, what is out of alignment from allowing me to feel freedom?  The answer always comes in and then I lean into my ultimate intention: choose the path that leads to freedom. Freedom of fear, regret, shame, guilt, old thought patterns, etc.

This year 3 words came to me: Love, allow, surrender.  This is the process I use to choose. Everything leads back to these, no matter what.

(If you need some help with your meditation you can use one of my guided meditations from the Limitless Hairdresser album or one of these from the Limitless Hairdresser podcast. On the podcast check the show notes for the 30 min episodes I record to see what has a free meditation in it! If you’re feeling it, just try this simple exercise 👇🏼👇🏼)

Take a few deep intentional breaths in and out through your nose. Relax into your body and allow your mind to adjust to a peaceful state.

Bring your awareness to the center of your chest.  Breathe into your spiritual heart (heart chakra) In this precious deep space of pure love and light ask the question to yourself in your mind.  “How do I want to feel moving forward into 2019?”

Whatever word comes into your mind, that is the one. Don’t judge it, don’t question it, that is it.  I had three come to me so I didn’t deny it, I just went with it….don’t worry, it will all make sense as you start to use them as your guides throughout the year.

2. Gratitude list

This is so simple, yet so powerful.  Light yourself some candles, grab your favorite cup of tea, and have yourself a little love fest.  Write down with pen and paper everything you were grateful for in 2018. (written word on paper is so much more powerful than an iPhone me)  I wrote gratitude for the physical and spiritual things that happened for me.

For example: I am grateful for my expanded awareness and I am grateful for all of my clients

Just keep writing one after another until your heart is satisfied! Smile a little nutty or cry tears of joy while you are doing it.  I found myself ugly crying and laughing at the same time...whatever feels good to you, let it out babe!

3. Visualization intention setting

I have been doing this practice for several years now and let me tell you what. Getting clear and very detailed about what you really want in life is one of the most important things we can do to attract abundance.

Not sure what you want?  No prob. Close your eyes and get settled into your dream 2019.  Again, I totally recommend using my guided meditation album if you’re not used to doing this. Or just guide yourself through with these simple prompts.

Take a few deep breaths in and out through your nose.

Allow your body to relax into the moment.

Use your imagination to envision your ideal situations for the year to come.

-Where are you?

-What are you doing?

-Who is around you?

-How do you feel?

-What do you have?

-What do others feel like around you?

Take note of every detail that you can and allow them to just paint a picture in your mind.

Allow yourself to feel all of the nuances of the moments as they happen.

Maybe you want to open a salon, build your clientele, start a family, travel, make a certain amount of money, pay off your debt.  Maybe you want to feel happy, at peace, powerful, confident, excited, connected, relieved, joyful, or accomplished.

Get out your journal and write down all of these things in as much detail as possible--feelings, materialistic things, just paint the picture.  Nothing is too big or too small as long as it feels good to you. Don’t judge it against what you think anyone else might do or what you “should” be doing.  This is your life you get to create, make sure it’s what YOU want.

4. The DONE list

This is the new ritual I added this year and I will do it again and again and again…maybe even during the year if I start getting antsy.  Remember how I said I can be a bit tough on myself because of my Capricorn nature?  Well this just shattered so many of my attachments. I sat down and took a good look at my year in a positive light only---for literally the first time ever.  I would typically rip it to shreds and focus heavy on the things I failed at or things I didn’t do good enough (in my critical mind).

All you have to do is bust out the ol pen and paper again and reflect on your awesome existence.  I Started in January 2018 and worked my way up to now. I wrote down positive things that happened or that I accomplished in each month.

I was shocked at how many things I actually did.  Writing them down and seeing it on paper was so eye opening, I can’t believe I have not done this for my whole life….what a freaking difference that would have made!!!

The best tip I can give you is to not judge yourself for not doing enough or doing things “good enough” just give yourself some credit because ya did it.

Here is a little picture highlight reel of my 2018 in a nut shell.  It was an incredible ride and I’m so excited to see where 2019 goes!

Cheers to you, you amazing human!  Remember... you are limitless and everything you are seeking is seeking you--so get out there and live the life of your dreams! #LimitlessHairdresser2019

We are in a time where the odds are in our favor, everything we could possibly want is at our fingertips.  The possibilities are endless.

Do you want to have a full book?  You don’t have to go door to door passing out business cards anymore, instead we post on social media.

Do you want to share your knowledge and be an educator?  You don’t have to wait to climb the ladder within a brand, you can do it on your own! (with my help)

Do you want to open a salon...and actually make money doing it?  There are several educators out there sharing what has made them successful.

Do you want another outlet to express yourself and have passive income beyond your BTC gig?  You can start a blog, youtube channel, or podcast.

Many of us don’t know where to start! You can probably google it...or shoot a DM to someone who is doing it already, I’m sure they will share a tip.

All these things and still we place limitations on ourselves.  We don’t believe we can. We don’t believe we are worthy. We don’t give ourselves the chance to fly.

Conditioning.  We have been been staring at a screen for years now infesting our minds with garbage.  Scroll, scroll, scroll, double tap, like, compare, compare, compare, repeat.

We are leaving trails of self doubt and insecurities all throughout our subconscious.  It’s no wonder we struggle with believing that we are capable of anything beyond where we are. Stuck.  Feeling like an outsider. Feeling like we aren’t good enough.

Couple all of that with a stigma of “who we are” passed down through the times.  With the exception of the upper echelon of elite trailblazers. The average hairdresser from middle america has had to claw our way to being respected.  Our parents would say...go to college first, hairdressers don’t make enough money, etc, etc, etc.

Now.  Who should be accountable to change all of this?  Us. We have to. It’s time to rise above the labels.  It’s time to take our power back and own who we truly can BE.

Limitless Hairdressers.

It all starts within us.  Reprogramming our minds to be confident, strong, giving, loving, worthy human beings...who happen to express ourselves through art, change people’s lives, and make an amazing living healing and having fun.

We deserve it, but it’s going to take some work and we have  to be willing to do the work. We have to expand our minds and gain new perspective.

You might be wondering why I have the cred to be able to help lead this movement?  Fair, fair. Let me tell you a little about me.

I’m a hairdresser who has been through 31 years of life.  Struggles, successes, more struggles. Depression, anxiety, fear, doubt, comparison, unworthiness. I’ve had it all too, and each day trust me, I face it.  But something changed in me, a really beautiful gift…I became aware. I started to realize my patterns, and I didn’t like them. I didn’t like how I felt sitting in all that low vibe nonsense.  So, I started making some changes and little by little they have become transformative.

I got in tune with myself and got to know myself for the purpose of becoming happier, more fulfilled, and free from the nasty things I was telling myself...and believing to be the truth. This work has not been anything I learned in school or in a book.  It has come from experience--the practicing, the dedicating, and the perseverance.

-Practicing being kind to myself and showing grace.

-Dedicating myself to continue growing.

-Persevering when things didn’t work out and I could just quit and go back to my old ways.

Through all of this I have discovered many pieces to the puzzle that are so simple, yet effective.  And while on this path I have met so many who have their pieces to share too. We are going to bring it all to you, and grow the tribe of  hairdressers who feel like they are connected and empowered.

Are you ready to join us in creating an industry that is unstoppable?  It’s our time. This is for us.

Energize your body and mind
3 shifts you can make to energize your body and mind as you work behind the chair. Using fuel to get you through a day at the salon.

Traveling the country for the last ten years teaching, attending classes, and working at hair shows, I have met some of the most incredible people!  When I slowed down this last year, working more from my hometown of Midland, Michigan, I realized how many like minded people were around me in our relatively small community!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with fellow beauty and wellness guru, Alana Jane!  She owns many businesses, her brick and mortars, Beauty studio Aura and Wellness center Onyx.  Then she has her online empire starting with her amazing instagram filled with gorgeous vegan health food, @beautifruitful and her community Feed your glow, where she shares tips on how to heal your body through food...and she has a beauty sleep podcast that will send you into a perfect trancy slumber!  You have got to go check out all of this magical content!

Alana is a former hairdresser who found her passion through inner beauty, wellness, and something we all :)  She found that the pressures of being a hairdresser and trying to play the role of who she thought she “should be” caused her symptoms of anxiety and depression.  She questioned her path and turned to food for healing her physical and internal self.

Alana says, “Food became an integral piece in my healing.  I realized that when I eat this = anxiety. When I eat this = I feel better.”  If you follow along on her instagram @beautifruitful you will see that this love affair with nourishing fruits and veggies is the best #foodporn ever!

Screen Shot 2018-07-29 at 11.20.53 AM.png

The first thing Alana did in becoming aware of what was causing these issues was to quit eating sugar and replaced it with more high vibe foods such as fruits and vegetables.  As she started swapping things out she realized that the foods she was fueling her body with started to relieve the anxiety in her mind and initiated a more peaceful world around her.

Screen Shot 2018-07-29 at 11.21.15 AM.png

Although she eats a vegan diet and that is what works for her current state, she believes that everyone has different needs.  She says, “You can still be connected and empowered while eating animal products. Just try different things and see what works best for you.”

We all know it’s a go go go life while we are working behind the chair and we sometimes form habits of what we reach for to keep us going throughout the day ( I myself have been working through a coffee reliance for years, especially after kids!  I’m using some of Alana’s helpful tips!!) Often a large coffee, a soda, fast food, or maybe even sweets to keep the energy up are common. The problem with this is we can crash, feel more tired because of the heaviness of the food, or not eat enough and feel fatigued.

Screen Shot 2018-07-29 at 11.21.30 AM.png

I asked Alana what are 3 shifts we can make to fuel our bodies and our minds.

  1. Instead of focusing on changing things in our diet, look at it as swapping things out.  Being mindful of caffeine can make a huge impact on the way we feel and how we can sustain throughout the day!  We need internal energy (fueling our minds) just as much as the stimulation of physical energy. Bring mindfulness to cleaner energy sources to help you be in a peak state.  Instead of drinking coffee or espresso try these swaps:

-Green Tea

*Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body.

*Compounds in green tea can improve your brain function a.k.a. Make you more smarter :)  There is caffeine, just not as much as coffee, but there is enough to produce a response without the jitters.

-Yerbe Mate

*Lots of caffeine, less side effects, more nutrients.

*Smooth increase of energy

*So many vitamins like: A, B1, C, E, calcium, iron, magnesium, and many more!

2. Snacks are essential, not mindless.  Shift your mind from eating a full out meal at work to small energizing bites.  Alana says to mix a fruit source with a green and that will give you the most sustainable energy. These are some of the best “fast foods” to fuel your mind and body!

*Loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber

*Great for muscle development (yay we can get fit while doing that blow out!)

*Can boost your energy levels within a half an hour of consumption.

*Lowers inflammation, we all could use this standing all day long!

*Aids in weight loss, YAY!  Low in calories, high on electrolytes, antioxidants, potassium, B&C vitamins.

*Cures bloating and improves digestion

*Rich in potassium--This helps muscles to contract and nerve cells to respond,’ll be a ninja hairdresser.

*They give you a feeling of fullness very quickly!

*Try a fruit mixed with spinach or spirulina.   The glucose and sodium are good for adrenal support and sustainable energy.  You want to keep your adrenaline stable because that can create anxiety. This means choose some of these power boosting foods instead of that extra double shot espresso!

3. Reframing our relationship to food.  Think about fueling yourself instead of feeding yourself.  When we are trying to be in a peak state of performance at work we want to keep our focus on our tasks at hand instead of our minds drifting toward indulging in meals.  Think to yourself, “Am I giving myself optimal fuel?” A great way to avoid feeling like you are depriving yourself of the luxury of delicious indulgence is this simple trick!  At night eat a meal amazingly yummy. Think of it as a reward. Something hearty and indulgent.

During the day = food for fuel

Evening meal = food for a reward

Keep this in mind: we are all on a journey!  Don’t judge yourself too harshly as you start to shift your habits into new healthy routines.  Go slow, and give yourself grace!

For more tips on healthy eating and lifestyle follow Alana at @beautifruitful on instagram and her blog A beautiful glow.

If you like this new way of thinking I have a huge treat for you!!  This fall for my Conscious haircolor tour I will have my dear friend and NYC private chef, Julia Chebotar, along with me to every location!  She will be creating healthy treats for us to sustain our energy throughout the day, give us tips on what we should eat and why!

**If you’re interested in the 2 day wellness and hair workshop at my salon in November, she will be dishing out her secrets there as well on a deeper level :)

Drop me some comments on the blog and let me know what you think!  Have a beautiful day friends!

Mind shift your way to success
3 tips.png

It’s going to be an amazing day at the salon!  You listened to your fav song on repeat while dancing around the house, you've got your best outfit on...the one that makes you feel like superwoman, you grab your coffee and jet off to the salon to start your day.  You spend the morning laughing and creating beautifully coiffed styles for your clients. Everything is going great! You are feeling fulfilled and unstoppable! Oh yeah, you’re owning this day.

Then it happens.

Your 12pm client is running fifteen minutes behind and she comes in flustered and talking about all of the reasons why she is late.  By the looks of it, her morning didn’t run as smoothly as yours...oh and she wants to go from her face framing balayage to a Lady Gaga inspired blonde for her “summer look”.  She also says she needs to be out of here by two to pick her kids up from daycare. You’re now another 15 minutes into the already late started appointment.

Yep, ok...this is possible....I can do it.---Insert inner dialogue--- “There is no way in hell that will ever happen!  What do you think I have super powers? Omg, what am I going to do? Oh, great, I just wasted another five minutes, I’m never going to be able to do this!”

While your head is spinning, you realize you are double booked.

Your 12:45 double booked client is early and staring you down from the waiting can feel the laser beams piercing your scrambled mind as you are just now beginning your first (late) client--and it all starts to go downhill from here.  All you can think of is everything going wrong and you are totally stuck in that mindset.

Now, I know that this is an extreme version of our bad day, but if we are honest at some level this has been our reality!  It can go from easy breezy to flying off the rails in 2.5 seconds. And let's be real, sometimes things are just out of our control physically. How can we stay calm when everything around us seems to be falling apart?

Instead of allowing the circumstances to control our mood and whack us out of our center, here are three simple tricks I have used to help me stay on track, handle difficult situations, and stay calm while I figure out solutions.

  1. Breathe

This may sound simple, but it’s the most important thing to do when we are under pressure, our heart is racing, and we are starting to panic.  Breathe. Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your nose. If you have a few moments to step outside or in the back room use my quick meditation to relieve anxiety.

Breath in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, and release out the nose for 8 seconds. Do this a few times until you feel calm.

Here is a link to my modern hairdresser meditation album.  I walk you through this technique and several others that are sure to help.

When we are in a state of panic, it’s very difficult to come up with solutions. Our mind is like a library of information and its flipping through every book all at once when we attach a negative experience to an emotion.  Bringing attention to our breath slows down the mind and allows us to find our center. This is a great first step in any instance where you want to crawl in a cave and hide. You will feel more clear and onto calling the shots like a boss from a clear, calm, and confident state.

     2. Honesty

We have got to re-learn how to take our power back as professionals.  The most valuable thing I have learned on my journey as a hairdresser and just as a human being is to always deliver my point of view through a centered state.  Do step one first so that you don’t come across as harsh or unkind, especially when we may have to tell our client something they don't want to hear.  We want to come from a place of confidence and caring, not reaction.

Many times clients will feel the need to "tell us" what they want/need instead of surrendering to our professionalism.  This isn't because they are a bad client or a bad person, it's from their conditioning of past experiences...whether in their personal life or a bad outcome when they sat in someone else's chair.  If we aren't confident in ourselves we may get caught in the trap of getting caught in this flow.   The misled thoughts of, "the client knows best and I must please them by doing exactly what they say so that they are happy and will come back."

This is a huge problem.  The minute we lose or power is the minute we start operating in this manner.  It will lead to stress, miscommunication, probably re-do's, and, well...I think you know how this goes..."It's too brassy.  This isn't what I said.  I wanted it lighter.  This cut isn't anything like I described it.  I want my money back."  and so on and so on...

What we must do instead is listen, repeat back, evaluate, and make our professional recommendations confidently and with no judgement to the client and their old pattern of communicating with a hairdresser.

If you immediately start spouting off your truth while you are still in an anxious space, this will make the other person, whether it is a client, coworker, or boss, feel defensive.  Get clear on what it is you need to say so that you can stay on course and give professional guidance.

3.  Refocus

Where your focus goes energy flows.  If you are focusing on all of the things that may go wrong, you will feel stress and resistance.  The best thing we can do is give attention to the positives. When you feel yourself feeding into a negative plot line instead of judging yourself for going down this path pause and refocus. Switch the script in your mind using a mantra.  A mantra is a simple statement that when repeated over and over again reprograms your mind to follow that belief you want instead of the negative one that was created.

Here are a few to help you refocus:

-I am in charge of how I feel today, I choose happiness

-I accept and allow success to flow today

-I attract positive outcomes

-I am full of inner peace

-I radiate love and understanding

-I trust my inner vision to make decisions

Next time you feel the surge of uncertainty, just remember: You hold all of the power, you are unstoppable, you are in control of your destiny, and you are amazing!

The new season cues new wardrobe and style changes! To help you out, we've created a quick list of some things that could potentially be your new best friends this summer. Happy May!!

1. Statement Denim Jacket

Denim jackets will never ever go out of style. They're just not going anywhere - and that's great for us because we can keep our favorites but still be forever inspired by the new looks and styles that we see every season. A cute but bold jacket can be your best friend all summer and even into fall because of its versatility. It doesn't need to be ironed which makes it a perfect grab-it-and-go piece, it will keep you warm on a summer night, it goes with pretty much anything, and if it looks good and reflects your style then its bound to get some positive attention. Here's some inspo:

2. Square-Necked Top

This is the perfect combo of trendy and flattering. A top with a square neck is so feminine and summery. It also sets the perfect stage for a statement necklace, or gives the spotlight to a daintier piece.

3. Colorful Tinted Glasses

If you want to make a statement this summer without putting too much thought and effort into it, then this is the perfect wardrobe addition for you. The great thing about finding a quirky pair of glasses is that you don't need to match them to anything else in your closet. They can be completely out of place but fit to whatever you've got. Pretty pastels and bright neons are in right now, just make sure you try them on before committing to a summer in shades of the color that you choose!

4. Slide Sandals

Slides have been in for quite awhile and they're likely to stick around, especially for the rest of the season. The great thing about these is they can be literally "slid" right into after a long day on your feet at work. A cute embellished or embroidered pair can give you the fancier look that you would want for a night out while a more relaxed pair can be worn for any casual occasion. Think: trendy sister of the Birkenstock-style sandal.

And then she was a butterfly...
“When she transformed into a butterfly, the caterpillars spoke not of her beauty, but of her weirdness.  They wanted her to change back into what she always had been. But she had wings.”
-Dean Jackson

If you are in a difficult place in your life that doesn’t feel true to who you are, the only way out  is to make a change -- any other path is likely to result in unhappiness. Continuing to remain in a place mentally or physically that doesn’t serve you, means it will continue to not serve you, over and over again.

The only way to rid yourself of this heavy weight is doing something even more challenging --  stepping into transformation.

Transformation is like change on steroids.

It’s not a little tweak, it’s full on overhaul. It’s an evaluation of yourself and your surroundings and then relentlessly moving in the opposite direction of your old habits and patterns.

You’re probably thinking this sounds like a fun, scary, exciting, or difficult opportunity, huh?

That’s cool, and it will be all of those things. I will also help you along the way and give you some other tools to rely on when you get stuck. If you’re already making excuses as to why you think this couldn’t happen for you because of your particular life situations...I got you.

When you’re done here go ahead and read the Excuses are like... blog post and when you are really ready to take the leap, go ahead and start planning out your future lifestyle with the guidance of the 4 essentials to living your dream life.

I believe that our inner dialogue dictates so much of what happens in the outside world -- AKA, our life. It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I became very aware of this phenomenon and how it had been playing out in my life. I noticed that when I truly set my intention on something, believed in it wholeheartedly, and stopped obsessing over it -- it would happen.

In addition to the amazing things you may manifest into your life, if your inner dialogue gets bogged down with negative thoughts toward yourself or others, that is what will play out in your reality.

Let’s run through an example: Your coworker is driving you crazy because they never clean up after themselves, always show up late and give no apologies for their behavior. This makes you insane on the inside because you just can’t believe that they would disrespect their workspace and the client’s time like this. In your mind, you are judging them, calling them lazy and disrespectful. You don’t like working with them (insert inner third eye roll) and they are under your skin...and could care less or unaware.

While they continue on, you can’t let go of all the ridiculous things they are doing and that’s all you can focus on. You start feeling stressed out and annoyed. Now you are hitting every stop light on the way home from work, your gas light just went on, you forgot to get groceries, and you get home to what looks like the aftermath of a hurricane. You’ve had enough and you are reacting to everyone in your house by yelling and now you have a headache.  Are you relating yet?

We give so much of our personal energy away when we focus on the negative. When the internal dialogue is playing out this drama and frustration it will appear in all aspects of your life.  That is the law of attraction happening folks.

To truly rid yourself of this takes practice and strength. Being brave enough to take a look at what you’re saying to yourself through your inner dialogue is the first step! Congrats! Now that I’ve got your attention and you are listening to that dialogue, say something nice to the inner you :)   You are perfect just the way you are, wherever you are now, wherever you have been, and where you will be.  Be kind and gentle to your past, present, and future self.

To keep this trend going in your life, here are three things that I have found that helped me transform from getting caught up in drama to living a life that has limitless possibilities and an abundance of happiness.

1.  Grace.  Give it to yourself, and give it often. Be gentle to yourself in this growth process and you’ll start to become aware of what is really going on beneath the surface. Assessing the inner dialogue, you’ll find some of the things you think about yourself and others will make you want to judge yourself. Know that you are not alone in this. This is a brave act and not everyone is ready to look at themselves. As you uncover things that you don’t like, and want to change, just acknowledge the thoughts and choices, forgive them and let them go. They are gone and you don’t have to feel guilt. We don’t have time to wallow in the past, so let’s move forward into a beautiful place.

2.  Acceptance.  Believe that you are deserving of all of the good things that are about to come your way. You are doing the work on yourself and must be ready to receive the amazing feelings and experiences that will happen as a result. Also know that with this change others will judge you and there will be haters. People who knew the old you will be uncomfortable for a time. Accept that this is not because of you. It is them, and with time, maybe they will be inspired to make the same leap into chane. Don’t halt your transformation because of others insecurities. Just give them tip #1...grace :)

3.  Visualize.  Now that you have gained some awareness, we need to move, move, move forward. Who do you want to become?  Where do you want to go? What does that life look like? Be clear on what this looks like and feels like. You can use my manifest your dream life workbook to help you get started.  I have a few words that are related to how I want to feel. I remind myself of them all the time.  Write them on sticky notes, repeat them in your journal, meditate on them, they are sacred. Everything you do should be working toward the goal of that feeling, so if it’s not serving you, go the opposite direction.

You’ve got this, you deserve this.  :)

Peace & love,

Hair education for the modern hairdresser
hair education.png

This last year I spent more money on education than I ever have before...and it was finally worth it!  In the past I have felt lackluster about hair shows and events, but certain peeps in our industry are really stepping up the game!  Hairdressers are caring more about intimacy, connection, and networking.  There certainly are some brands delivering just what we are craving!

Here are three things to consider when choosing which classes, events, or shows you are going to attend.

  1. Community.  I think we are all searching for this in some way.  That sense of belonging and being around like minded individuals.  When you are at an event or a show you want to feel connected and understood.  Does the event offer elements of the values that you hold?  If so, you'll probably find your tribe there!

  2. Value.  When we are handing over our money, sacrificing our time, and being away from our businesses we want to make sure that what we are investing in is worth it to us.  Is the time and energy being put in giving you an ROI?  Take the return of money off the table, and do you think you will feel fulfilled and/or empowered from your experience?

  3. Opportunity. You want to gain momentum from your trip.  Go back to the salon and really plug in what you learned.  Make sure you will have a chance to network and make some connections that will be beneficial to you or your career path.  Are you in the right place for what outcomes you are trying to achieve?

My top picks and what to look out for

1. Eufora VisionQuest

Hosted at the stunning Omni La Costa resort in Southern California, this event was a game changer!  Eufora brought out the big guns when it comes to influence in health, business, and wellness.  Speakers like Vishen Lakhiani, Kindra Hall, and one of Oprah and Dr. Oz's favorites, Kimberly Snyder.  These inspirational gurus gave keynotes on main stage and to get even more intimate you could sign up for a breakout session.  There were 15 more breakout session throughout the two days where you could indulge mind, body, spirit, and some hair business.

This was a solid 100 in my book!  Check out this video to see the highlight reel, and what some of the attendees were inspired by.

2) Bayou St. Blonde

One word: HAIRCATION!  The Left Brain Group sure knows how to throw a good ol' southern soirée in the heart of New Orleans.  This action packed event was full of hair...lots of hair, photography, runways, secret locations, open bars, and lots of networking opportunities.

They keep this super unique event very intimate by limiting the attendance to under 200 hairdressers.  If you're into hanging out and meeting new people while you kick back with bubbly to watch some of the most incredible, couture...and dare I say underground hairdressers unleash the passion of their craft, don't miss out for 2019!  Did I mention that it's all independent educators, how cool is that!!

Check out these pics from the event

3) Behind the Chair Show

Do you like high energy?  What about lots of colorful hair?  Celebrity hairdresser's insight?  How about meeting some of the coolest people in the industry?  Just about every person you "double tap" on Insta is at this event!  You will find yourself referring to people by their @ handle by the time you hug each other goodbye.

I have been to the BTC show 2 times now and although it's not quite like my other two choices, which were pretty low-key vibes, this one has got so much energy to offer.  Remember my #1 suggestion for picking where to spend your cash money--community.  This 3 day event definitely has that to offer.

This last August when I attended, I went completely on my own as a curls finalist.  I got invited to the VIP cocktail party...where I knew ZERO people in "real life", only from the gram.  I have to admit, I was pretty intimidated walking in that room...with all the "Insta famous" people surrounding me.

The cool thing about it...I didn't run away, LOL, I stayed and got introduced to some of the most amazing humans I have ever met that were in my same boat.  Guess where they are now, KILL-ING-IT.  I don't know what kind of sparks flew that weekend, but we all formed some mega bonds and some fires were LIT.  I'm forever grateful for that opportunity and if you feel like going in blind to "find your tribe" do it, you won't regret it.

P.S. tickets are on sale now, and you can buy them here!

Cool stuff coming up!

the best spring wardrobe piece for hairdressers.jpg

This Spring tease calls for a new wardrobe staple: The Midi Skirt. Not too short, not too long, and not too tight. This piece is about to be your best friend this season, here's why:

1. It gives you the comfort of a long skirt without picking up all the hair

The midi solves most of the maxi's issues. That is: you won't trip over it, you don't have to wear a specific height of shoe with it, and most importantly, it won't pick up all the little hairs from the floor. You're free to roam! Bonus: your legs will look longer, but you'll only have to shave your calves. You're welcome.

2. You'll feel like you're actually in sweatpants

Sure, skinny jeans are cute and mini skirts are fun, but what's better than a skirt that keeps your legs covered and gives them enough room to float around? This skirt is the epitome of comfort and style - you'll feel totally comfortable, but you'll look like a model.

3. You can pair it with almost any basic shirt/bodysuit

No need to purchase an entire outfit when you get a midi skirt - most of the shirts you have are likely to pair very nicely with it! You can go simple with the skirt and wear it with patterned tops, or find a cute patterned skirt for your plain tops - whatever fits your style!

4. It's an easy day-to-night look

The midi makes for an easy shift from your daily routine to your fun night plans. It's professional and functional enough for the salon, but you can wear it out to a fancy (or casual) dinner, and you could dance in it all night long!

5. Affordable and re-wearable

You can find some super cute and affordable midi skirts in the links below. And their functionality makes them so easy to re-wear! It's like buying a great pair of jeans that you don't hate wearing. You'll be comfortable, on trend, and not breaking the bank.

These are just a few looks that I've been drawn to, but obviously there are a ton of different colors, styles and patterns out there just waiting to be adopted into your wardrobe! Try some on, experiment with the looks, see how you like them! What better time to try something new than in the Spring?

Finding inspiration for work outfits can be hard, especially when you're trying to put something together that's both stylish and practical for the salon. Sometimes the answers to our style woes are actually very simple, we just need to get some outside advice. In this guide, I'll give you four super simple tips to looking effortlessly chic - even on days when you just want to roll out of bed and show up. *Side note: It's actually really easy to be cute without trying too hard!

1. Less = More

I know I say this a lot, but it's true! Sometimes sticking to the basics for a few days can help you recharge and look extra fresh. A simple tee with jeans (both can be black!) and maybe a dainty little necklace can actually go a long way. You're hair can be messy-casual or done up - whatever you're feeling! The point is, you don't need to overdo the look just because you think it will make you look more put together. It's better to look simple and fresh than to go overboard and have multiple wardrobe malfunctions. Also, sometimes clients like to see that you're going with a simpler look because it shows that you're making the appointment more about them and less about constantly fixing you're detailed look - it's a confidence move!

2. Find a more functional "dupe" for your non-functional pieces.

In other words, the bell sleeve top could be replaced with a fitted blazer, the stack of bangle bracelets can be set aside for a daintier chain, the almost-too-tight skinnies for a slim-legged jean - you get the point! The idea here is that you look more effortlessly stylish when you look comfortable. They say that "pretty hurts", but that's not always the case. You can looks ultra-cool just by dressing in ways that make you look like you've been doing this for years and you just can't be bothered with all this extra pizzazz. By solving your daily malfunctions instead of ignoring and repeating them, you can eliminate the issues altogether!

3. Make unlikely pairings

Sometimes switching things up and going against the norm is the best way to trick everyone into thinking you're a real fashionista. Some examples would be cute sneakers with a nice dress, wide-legged pants or mens trousers with a lacy top, or a boxy tee with a long skirt. The possibilities are endless! However, keep in mind that if you're going to make a bold move, then let it speak for itself. You don't need to be extra with the whole outfit, let the rest be simple and fresh. This tip might not be for everyone! Look at your environment, your clientele, and your personal style, then decide if you're ready to be a little daring.

4. Belt it, stud it, tie it, etc.

Tiny accessory touches like belts and scarfs can make a piece look instantly more involved (while still looking effortless and comfortable). Sometimes I like to take some of my belts and wrap them around my waist if I'm wearing a longer shirt. Obviously the belt doesn't have to be super tight, but if you're wearing a looser shirt, then it can give your waist some definition and transform the shirt into something new. You can buckle the belt or just tie it for a super chic look! I also like to take little stud earrings and put them on the collars of my blouses sometimes - It's the sweet little details that can make a difference! Don't be afraid to experiment without fussing over it too much.

Remember, the point is to look effortlessly chic, so try not to overthink your look too much. Hopefully this helps for the new season as you try to freshen up some looks!

Happy styling! x

You don't have to be an artist to hit a creative block.

Creative blocks can happen at the salon, when you're in the kitchen trying to figure out what to cook for dinner, when you're taking the same commute every day, and especially in your wardrobe. When it hits, and you're overcome with a sudden wave of distaste for your routines, you look for things to blame. You start to think that the only ways you could solve your issues would involve moving away or wiping and replacing your wardrobe or just going out to eat instead of coming up with something to make. But these are not rational solutions, and if you spend your life constantly avoiding issues and annoyances rather than tackling them head on, I can guarantee you will never be satisfied with the outcome.

I've always been a firm believer in the saying that goes something like "If you can't change something/someone, then change the way you deal with it/them." It might sound too simple, or like one of those phrases that can only be applied to certain situations, but honestly, you can even apply the phrase to the idea itself! What I'm trying to say is that grand and dramatic changes aren't always necessary for problem solving. Sometimes you just need to face things with a different mindset. Look at the situation from another angle, even if it's out of your comfort zone.

So why is this post in the Style section this week? Well, let's talk about your wardrobe and what we discussed last weekYou have this idea in mind of how you see yourself at your full style potential. In this vision, you're rocking pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident, you've got effortless outfits lined up, and you trust in yourself to shop responsibly, picking things that fit your lifestyle and your personal preferences. Sounds great, right? So what's going on now, why aren't you already living this seemingly perfect style dream? The answer doesn't have to do with your budget, where you live, or  any other outside factor that you would like to place all the blame on. The real answer comes from how your choosing to act on what's in front of you - that's the only thing you truly have control over! Hear me out.

You can't be a perfect human, but thankfully you can be a very adaptable human, which is actually super close to being perfect. If you can train yourself to adapt to your resources and environment without hating on the things that are out of your control, then you'll have the world by the booty. This does not mean settling for things that you know are beneath you and your abilities. What I'm saying is yes, adapt and make do with what you have, but if you know that you're capable with going the extra mile, then just do it.

You can relate this to your wardrobe in many ways. Instead of kicking yourself over the fact that you've accumulated a collection of clothes that you're becoming unhappy with, or you still feel like you don't have what you really want, find a way to make these things work. You can start by not comparing yourself to other people who you see as having better style than you. Guess what, trying to line yourself up for a style competition with someone else is never going to work. This is because style revolves around one beautiful idea: Individuality.

It's not about looking just like your favorite models and celebrities. It's not about working so hard just to buy some expensive designer bag just because it's so in right now. It's not about being as fill-in-the-blank as you can just to get a certain reaction from people. Your style is about you, so make it that way! Be unique, don't tell yourself that there is a specific style name out there that you have to conform to. If you don't like your current style, do something about it - But be aware of how you got to that point in the first place. Maybe getting to your dream style doesn't involve shopping at all, it just means falling in love with what you have all over again. Look for reasons to love each and every one of your pieces and flaunt them! An attitude change can turn your entire look around. There are few things more intriguing than a positively confident person!!

I know there was no easy "how to" tutorial in this post or helpful step-by-step of how to reclaim your love for individual style. However, I challenge you to reevaluate your daily lifestyle, especially from a personal style viewpoint. The biggest lesson you can take from this is that inner confidence and a willingness to put hard work and a positive attitude before your urge to blame factors like your wardrobe for your unhappiness will take you to outstanding heights. Celebrate your individuality every single day - and don't let routines and patterns drag you into thinking that life has set grids for you to fit into. Do your own thing, do it well, wear what feels right, and watch the world adapt to you.

Let's talk about brands.

You might be saying to yourself "what brand??" And if so, that's why we need to talk about them! The truth is, we all have a brand. You don't need a website, clothing line, or stellar Instagram feed to have a brand. It's all about how you present yourself to the world every time you step out into it. That's not just limited to the salon, conferences, classes, or fancy events - it also includes the grocery runs, the nights out with your friends, and the kids' soccer games. You get the idea.

So why does this matter? Why should you always be conscious of how your public appearance will affect your brand? Because that's who you are! And you have control over it!! That's the great thing about your brand - it's all you.

When you wake up in the morning, get dressed, and do your hair and makeup, you're working on your brand! The little decisions that go into how you want to look each day make up who you are and how you want to be seen.

Your personal style is obviously a huge part of your brand. If you can maintain a wardrobe that makes you look like you have your life together both inside and outside of the salon, then you will soar. Your clients will feel more confident in you and potential future clients will be more comfortable approaching you! The key is consistently dressing for the best - and this doesn't mean formal business attire everywhere you go, it just means being conscious of what you throw on before you head out.

Ask yourself: "Does what I'm wearing represent my brand? Am I going to want to crawl in a hole if someone I know sees me like this?"

The best way to ensure that you'll always look like boss lady is by setting aside some time to really define your personal style and make sure it is flexible enough to fit your lifestyle. Here is a helpful graphic with tips for narrowing down your style to fit your brand:
